UPDATE - Council Amends First Reading of Ordinance Revisions Updating Animal Care Laws

Second Reading Scheduled for May 25

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – During yesterday’s business meeting, City Council suggested revisions to the proposed amendments that focus on Chapter 6 of the Corpus Christi City Code of Ordinances. Chapter 6 is dedicated to animal care and control.

The revisions will be the first ordinance updates regarding animal care since December 2014.  The revisions will help improve the quality of life for the pets and wildlife in our community by bringing the ordinances up to date with current animal welfare practices. In addition, the proposed changes will help to address issues that affect public health and the potential for community spreading of animal-related diseases.

Following the updates, ordinance language will better clarify definitions and address additional areas of concern. The changes will include:

  • Transitioning from dog licenses to microchipping
  • Addressing the failure of pet owners to reclaim their animals from Corpus Christi Animal Care Services
  • Creating an “aggressive dog” section
  • Defining what is considered a “shelter” for pets
