CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – “What are you doing for others?” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s question to us has inspired us to reflect upon it each year on this day and, most importantly, to take action.
On January 21, the City of Corpus Christi Senior Companion Program (SCP) volunteers will celebrate MLK Day of Service by delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program. Meal service to the home-bound elderly is another great way our seniors care for one another.
Senior Corps Senior Companions are volunteers age 55+ who make a difference by providing assistance and friendship to adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills. We help these individuals remain independent in their homes instead of having to move to institutional care. Senior Companions give families or professional caregivers a much-needed time off from their duties, run errands, and often provide friendship for their clients.
The Senior Companions Program has approximately 87 volunteers who provided 87,741 service hours during FY2018 valued at $2,166,325.20 (according to independentsector.com volunteer calculator).
