Thousands of Runners Expected for Annual Beach to Bay Relay Marathon

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX—The City of Corpus Christi is preparing for the 47th Annual Beach to Bay Relay Marathon on Saturday, May 18. Over 8,000 runners and hundreds of spectators will participate in the event. Beach to Bay is one of the largest relay marathons in the United States and draws competitors from across the globe to honor those serving in the United States military.

Participants can run the 26.2-mile course in three different ways: as a relay of six runners, a relay of two runners or one runner completing the full marathon. The race will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the beach near the intersection of Ellif Road and Access Road 5 and end at McCaughan Park on Shoreline Drive.

THE ROUTE

• Leg 1 will begin at the Intersection of Ellif Road and Access Road 5 and end at the Beach South of Bob Hall Pier (3.46 miles). 
• Leg 2 will begin at the Beach South of Bob Hall Pier and end at the north side of JFK Causeway Bridge (4.67 miles). 
• Leg 3 will begin at the north side of JFK Causeway Bridge and end at Waldron Road near NAS Drive (4.36 miles). 
• Leg 4 will begin at Waldron Road near NAS Drive and end just outside the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC) north gate on Ocean Drive (4.60 miles). 
• Leg 5 will begin just outside of the NASCC north gate on Ocean Drive and end on the west side of Swantner Park (4.20 miles). 
• Leg 6 will begin on the west side of Swantner Park and end at the finish line at McCaughan Park (4.93 miles). 

Significant traffic impacts are expected along Park Road 22, Intracoastal Bridge, JFK Causeway, NAS Drive, Ocean Drive and Shoreline Boulevard as early as 4:00 a.m.

This includes dedicating one lane for runners along the course, the closure of the intersection of Park Road 22 and Aquarius Street and exits along SH 358 to the Intracoastal Bridge and Waldron Road. Closures along these routes aim to ensure the safety of the runners and the spectators during the event and will be removed on a rolling basis based on the direction of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Safety is a top priority, so motorists are reminded to be aware of the runners, follow the posted detour signs, or seek alternate routes to avoid delays.
