Street Closures and Traffic Impacts

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Street closures along major City streets impacting motorists and pedestrians are listed below. These closures may be due to construction, special event activity, or maintenance. All closures are subject to change due to weather, emergency work, or other circumstances. 

Work zone safety is a priority. Motorists are advised to slow down, follow posted speed limits, pay attention, watch out for workers, obey signs and flaggers, and allow additional travel time for delays.

CITY STREET RECONSTRUCTION OR MAINTENANCE PROJECTS

Brawner Parkway – Kostoryz Road to Carroll Lane (Bond 2018)

During Phase 2 of construction, Brawner Parkway (north and south of the median) will be reduced to one-way traffic flow in the eastbound direction. The following traffic changes and lane closures will be implemented:

  • Brawner Parkway’s westbound lane (south of median) is closed for construction. The eastbound lane will remain open for use during this first phase of construction.
  • Brawner Parkway’s westbound lane (north of median) is closed for construction. The eastbound lane will remain open for use during this first phase of construction.

Baldwin Boulevard – SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to Port Avenue

The contractor will implement temporary lane closures along Baldwin Boulevard from SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to Port Avenue.

Fairview Drive – Up River Road to Kenwood Drive (RSRP)

Fairview Drive is closed for street reconstruction between Up River Road and Kenwood Drive. Residents along Fairview Drive will be provided with local access. Construction is expected to last several months.

Holly Road - Airline Road to Crosstown (SH-286) (SPMP)

The contractor will begin applying new asphalt to five lanes of Holly Road. Construction will take place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Two-way traffic will remain open. However, the contractor will conduct single-lane closures along Holly Road, beginning at the Airline Road intersection and continuing westward to Crosstown (SH-286). Intersections along the construction path will experience daily short-term closures or restrictions. The project is expected to last two months, weather permitting.

Junior Beck Road – Bear Lane to Old Brownsville Road (Bond 2018)

During this Phase 2 of the project, Junior Beck Road will be temporarily converted to one-way traffic in the southbound direction from Bear Lane towards Old Brownsville Road. Corporate Drive intersection at Junior Beck will be temporarily closed for this phase. Residents will continue to have local access from South Padre Island Drive (SPID) Access Road. Wayfinding and detour signage will be in place to guide motorists to their destinations. The temporary one-way and intersection closure is expected to last several months.

Leopard Street – Palm Drive to Nueces Bay Boulevard (Bond 2018) 

Leopard Street is reduced to one lane, in each direction, along the eastbound lanes (south side) of Leopard Street between Nueces Bay Boulevard and Battlin’ Buc Boulevard. The intersection at Leopard Street and Nueces Bay Boulevard is open to traffic. Additional temporary intersection closures will be implemented along the south side of Leopard Street as construction progresses.

Park Road 22 Bridge and Channel – Whitecap Boulevard to Commodores Drive (SH 361) 

Park Road 22 is closed for construction on the south side (eastbound lanes) between Compass Street and Cruiser Street. Motorists traveling eastbound (south side) along Park Road 22 are shifted to the westbound lanes (north side) between Compass Street and Cruiser Street. Travel lanes in each direction are reduced to one lane between Compass Street and Cruiser Street.

Staples Street – Autotown Drive to Barracuda Place (Street Preventative Maintenance Program)

The contractor for the Public Works Department will implement temporary lane closures along Staples Street to perform street maintenance. Several major intersections along Staples Street will experience temporary closures or restrictions. Motorists should seek alternate routes to avoid construction and delays, which are expected to last several weeks.  

Staples Street – Baldwin Boulevard to Kostoryz Road (Bond 2018) 

During Phase 1 of construction on Staples Street, between Baldwin Boulevard and Kostoryz Road, drivers and pedestrians should expect the following traffic changes:

  • The northbound lanes and center-turn lane (east side) of Staples Street, between Baldwin Boulevard and Kostoryz Road, will be closed for construction. Traffic will be shifted to the west side of Staples Street (southbound lanes) and reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Traffic along northbound Staples Street will be shifted to the west side (southbound lanes) of the roadway approaching the Kostoryz Road intersection.
  • The inside left-turn lane will be closed along Kostoryz Road at the Staples Street intersection. 
  • The intersection of Texas Avenue at Staples Street, on the east side, will be temporarily closed for utility line installations. 
  • Sidewalks within the construction zone will be closed on the east side of Staples Street. 

Swantner Drive – Indiana Avenue to Texan Trail (Bond 2018) 

Swantner Drive is closed to thru traffic between Ralston Street and Glazebrook Street. Chamberlain Street and Vaky Street are open for local traffic. McCall Street will remain open from Reid Drive to Swantner Drive to allow access to the Lindale Senior Center. 

Reid Drive, Glazebrook Street, and Swantner Drive from Glazebrook Street to Texan Trail are open.

Weber Road - Staples Street to McArdle Road (SPMP)

Beginning Tuesday, August 30, the contractor will begin implementing temporary lane closures for street maintenance on Weber Road from Staples Street to McArdle Road from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday over the next three weeks. The first phase, which will begin Tuesday, will cover the area of Weber Road from Staples Street to Gollihar Road. The second phase will cover the area of Weber Road from Gollihar Road to McArdle Road. Two-way traffic will remain open during the milling and paving operation. Work is expected to last four weeks.

CITY PERMITTED CLOSURES

Bear Lane -Junior Beck Drive to Heinsohn Road

The contractor for a private development will implement temporary full-street closures to install new storm culverts across Bear Lane. Businesses and residents will be notified of temporary closures and provided with access. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

Betty Jean Drive – at Cain Drive

The City contractor is rehabilitating sanitary sewer lines at the intersection of Betty Jean Drive and Cain Drive. The contractor will be implementing a temporary street closure at this intersection. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

Born Street – South Water Street to South Chaparral Street

The contractor for AEP Texas will be doing equipment maintenance along Born Street. The contractor will require a temporary full street closure of Born Street from South Water Street to South Chaparral Street to allow crews to work in the affected area. Work at this location is expected to last several days. 

Carancahua Street – Agnes Street to Coopers Alley

The contractors for the city are making repairs on a wastewater line. The contractors will implement temporary lane closures along Carancahua Street between Agnes Street and Coopers Alley. Construction is expected to last several weeks.

Deer Run Drive – Up River Road to Stone Wall Drive

The contractor for the city will install new ADA ramps for midblock crossing, signs, and pavement markings for the Tuloso-Midway Primary School as part of the Safe Routes to School program. Temporary lane closures will implement within the school zone limits along Deer Run Drive, Stonewall Drive, and Up River Road. Work at this location is expected to last one month.

Juarez Street, Salazar Street, and Garden Street (IDIQ Project 18100A)

The contractor for the city is implementing temporary street closures on Juarez Street, Salazar Street, and Garden Street to improve stormwater drainage. Residents will be notified of temporary closures and provided with access. Work at this site will last several months.

Kostoryz Road – at Gollihar Road Intersection

The contractor for AEP Texas is performing maintenance of electrical facilities near the intersection of Kostoryz Road and Gollihar Road. The contractor will implement temporary lane closures along southbound travel lanes of Kostoryz Road approaching the Gollihar Road intersection. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

Kostoryz Road – at McArdle Road Intersection

The contractor for AEP Texas is performing maintenance of electrical facilities at the intersection of Kostoryz Road and McArdle Road. The contractor will implement temporary lane closures along northbound travel lanes of Kostoryz Road approaching the McArdle Road intersection. The contractor has secured police officers to assist with traffic control if traffic signals go dark during maintenance operations. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

Kostoryz Road – Holly Road to Johanna Street

The contractor for AEP Texas is performing upgrades of electrical facilities along Kostoryz Road from Holly Road to Johanna Street. The contractor will implement temporary lane closures along the northbound lanes of Kostoryz Road. Work at this location is expected to last one month.

Leopard Street – Doss Street to Peabody Avenue

The contractor for AT&T will be conducting temporary lane closures along Leopard Street from Doss Street to Peabody Avenue to complete a conduit relocation. Work at this location is expected to last several months.

McKenzie Street – 18th Street to 17th Street

A residential contractor is temporarily closing the street to position a crane to assist with the construction of a concrete wall. Temporary street closures will be implemented as needed for two months. Residents will be notified of the temporary closures and provided with residential access.

Mexico Street – Howard Street to Caldwell Street (Guerra Underground)

The subcontractor for Flat Iron Dragados is installing a new wastewater line between Lipan Street and Caldwell Street as part of the New Harbor Bridge Utility Relocation Project. Construction has progressed to the next section. The third phase starts at Howard Street, extends to Caldwell Street, and will require a temporary full street closure of Mexico Street. Traffic will be detoured where closures are required at intersections. Residents and places of worship will always have access during construction. Construction is expected to last several months.

Molina Drive – Bloomington Street to Villarreal Drive

The residential contractor is temporarily closing the street to position a crane to assist with the construction of a concrete wall. Temporary street closures will be implemented as needed during a two-month span. Residents will be notified of the temporary closures and provided with residential access.

North Carancahua Street – Buffalo Street to Antelope Street

The contractor for AEP Texas will be doing equipment maintenance along North Carancahua Street. The contractor will require a temporary full street closure of North Carancahua Street from Buffalo Street to Antelope Street to allow crews to work in the affected area. Work at this location is expected to last several days. 

North Chaparral Street – Lawrence Street to Schatzell Street

The contractor for Cosmopolitan Apartments LLC is performing building façade maintenance along North Chaparral Street from Schatzell Street to Lawrence Street. The contractor will implement temporary sidewalk closures along the building on North Chaparral and temporary parking restrictions. Work at this location is expected to last one month.

Ocean Drive – Ropes Street to Sinclair Street (AEP Texas)

The contractor for AEP Texas is replacing a streetlight pole assembly and will conduct daily lane closures for the left lanes in each direction of Ocean. Construction is expected to last one week.

Paul Jones Avenue – at Sims Drive Intersection

The contractor for AEP Texas will be doing equipment maintenance at the intersection of Paul Jones Avenue and Sims Drive. The contractors are implementing daily one-lane flagger operations to assist motorists around the work area. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks. 

Port Avenue – Chaparral Street to IH-37

The contractor for the City Public Works Department is performing street maintenance on Port Avenue between Chaparral Street to IH-37 Access Road. Maintenance crews will be cleaning expansion joints and performing concrete repairs as part of the City’s IDIQ project. Motorists should expect various daily lane closures throughout the project limits. Maintenance work is expected to last 30 days.

Port Avenue – Horne Road to Prescott Street (SH 286 Frontage) (Clark Pipeline)

The contractor is replacing a 16-inch water main along South Port Avenue from Horne Road to Baldwin Boulevard. The construction of the water main is divided into several phases. Construction for the next phase will affect Port Avenue from Horne Road to Tarlton Street. Southbound Port Avenue will remain reduced to one lane, utilizing the center turn lane as the travel lane. Northbound Port Avenue travel lanes will not be affected. Construction at this location is estimated to last several months.

Rodd Field Road – at Southhaven Drive Intersection

The contractor for AEP Texas is performing maintenance of electrical facilities at the intersection of Rodd Field Road and Southhaven Drive. Contractors are implementing daily one-lane flagger operations to assist motorists around the work area. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

Starr Street – Chaparral Street to Mesquite Street

Contractors for Spectrum are installing new cable and communication services for a downtown business. The contractor will implement temporary sidewalks and parking lane closures to create a work area to perform directional drilling operations. The closure will be set up daily and is expected to last several weeks.

Saratoga Boulevard (SH 357) – Ayers Street to Weber Road

Beginning Monday, August 29, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will combine separate school zones serving five schools into a continuous mile-long school zone along Saratoga Boulevard between Ayres Street and Weber Street. The change will implement one school zone time for all the schools within those limits for the morning and afternoon hours.

The new school zone time will also include Kostoryz Road north of Saratoga Boulevard in front of the Mary Carroll High School.

In cooperation with the City of Corpus Christi, school zone flashers in the expanded zone will activate from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The new school zone and times serve St. John Paul II High School, Bishop Garriga Middle School, Mary Carroll High School, Most Precious Blood School, and the School of Science and Technology. Message boards will alert drivers to the new school zone, and all flashers will become active on Monday.

Tancahua Street – Leopard Street to Lipan Street 

Tancahua Street from Leopard Street to Lipan Street is closed for pavement repair. The repair process may require temporary lane closures along the current closure.

Businesses within the affected area will maintain driveway access at all times. Water services will continue for all customers along the construction path. Work is expected to last one month.

Villa Drive – Baldwin Boulevard to Agnes Street

The contractor for the City Utilities Department is performing emergency repairs to a wastewater manhole. Villa Drive is temporarily closed to through traffic Detours will provide local traffic access from Baldwin Boulevard and Agnes Street. The temporary street closure is expected to last one month. 

Wooldridge Road – Mystic Star Drive to Victoria Park Road

The contractor for AEP Texas is doing equipment maintenance along Wooldridge Road near the Victoria Park Road intersection. Contractors are implementing daily one-lane flagger operations to assist motorists around the work area. Work at this location is expected to last several weeks.

SPECIAL EVENTS

ArtWalk Festival – Starr Street and Peoples Street (from Mesquite Street to Chaparral Street) and Chaparral Street (from Lomax Street to Lawrence Street)

On Friday, September 2, the Downtown Management District will hold its monthly ArtWalk Festival in the Downtown Corpus Christi area. Full street closures will be implemented on Starr Street from Mesquite Street to Chaparral Street and Peoples Street from Mesquite Street to Chaparral Street. Chaparral Street will also be closed from Lomax Street to Lawrence Street. Street parking will be restricted near these areas. Street Closures at these locations are expected to last the weekend.
