Monkeypox Cases Rise in the United States
The Public Health District Urges Early Reporting

CORPUS CHRISTI TX – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues tracking the monkeypox outbreak that has spread worldwide in countries typically not impacted, including the United States.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can cause rashes, which may resemble pimples or blisters, sometimes accompanied by flu-like symptoms. People who develop rashes should avoid direct contact with others and immediately reach out to their health care provider. Clinicians should report all suspected cases of monkeypox to the Corpus Christi – Nueces County Public Health District.
The first U.S. case of monkeypox was reported in the state of Massachusetts in late May 2022. Since then, 1,470 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the United States, with 43 cases reported in Texas alone.
To date, no cases of monkeypox have been reported in Nueces County.
Monkeypox spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s rash, scabs, or bodily fluids, including saliva. It can also be transmitted through face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets or kissing someone infected with the monkeypox virus.
