Council Approves New Storage Facility for North Padre Island
Will Store Beach Maintenance Equipment
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council awarded a construction contract to South Texas Building Partners, Inc. of Corpus Christi, TX, for the construction of a new storage facility for beach maintenance equipment. Funding is allocated from the State Hotel Occupancy Tax (SHOT) fund, the FY 2022 operating and capital budgets, and Bonds 2014 and 2018.
This item authorizes the construction of a 6,000 square-foot storage facility with a wash station. The project will include utility improvements, landscaping, and an aesthetic façade to blend in with the surrounding community. The facility will be located within Commodores Park on Commodores Road next to Fire Station #15.
The City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department provides beach maintenance on Padre Island using heavy equipment. Currently, the equipment is being stored outside and is unprotected from the elements. This issue contributes to an accelerated rate of equipment degradation, increased maintenance costs, and a decreased service lifecycle.
During the preliminary feasibility study, it was determined that Commodores Park would be the best location for a storage building to house the equipment when not in use. The selected location is relatively close to the beaches and Packery Channel, where most of the work is conducted. In addition, this location will cause the least amount of disruption to traffic when traveling work routes.
The project is set to begin in March 2022, with anticipated completion in January 2023. For more information, please call Sr. Public Information Officer Melanie Lowry at 361-826-3837 or by email at melaniel@cctexas.com.
