City and County Partner for West Haven Park Improvements

Splash Pad Proposed for District 3 Park

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council approved an amendment to the interlocal agreement with Nueces County for park improvements, including a splash pad at West Haven Park, located at 1718 Cliff Maus Drive. The initial agreement was approved on October 26, 2021.

The amendment is to update the financial contribution from Nueces County as a result of the actual bid process. The total project cost reflects the update from $375,000 to $489,553, of which the County will pay $279,553 for construction and an additional $35,000 for engineering costs. The amendment will not change the City’s contribution to the project, which includes up to $175,000 for construction costs and an additional $75,000 for utilities.

District 3 Council Member, Roland Barrera, is a strong supporter of the collaborative effort between the City and Nueces County to make improvements at West Haven Park. The collaboration began in 2015. In 2016, Phase I improvements included a walking trail, a half-basketball court, fitness equipment, irrigation and turf for multi-use athletic field, lighting, and a new park sign with landscaping. In 2017, Phase 2 included the installation of new playground equipment. Phase 3, the proposed splash pad, came as a request from the community.

“I want to commend District 3 Councilman, Roland Barrera, and Precinct One Nueces County Commissioner, Joe A. Gonzalez, on this collaboration between governments which will yield great results for our respective residents,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “This is an exciting partnership that serves the children of Corpus Christi.”

The community is invited to a joint City-County Groundbreaking Ceremony for the splash pad scheduled for March 7, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at West Haven Park.
