City to Open Second Short-Term Shelter for Seniors and Families

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi is opening a 24-hour Emergency Warming Shelter at the Calallen FEMA Dome for seniors, families, and anyone in need of refuge during the extreme cold temperatures, power outage and water boil the city is currently experiencing. Anyone in the community that needs emergency shelter tonight should go immediately. We will be accepting residents until we reach capacity.

“This shelter is a display of our city’s humanity. We are working around the clock to help our residents because we understand that many of you are without power and need immediate shelter tonight,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said.

The 24-hour Emergency Warming Shelter will open tonight, Wednesday, February 17 at 8:00 PM, and close the morning of Saturday, February 20.

The Calallen FEMA Dome is located on 4001 Wildcat Drive.

Anyone seeking transportation to the 24-hour Emergency Warming Shelter can contact the RTA starting at 6:30 PM TONIGHT- UNTIL 9 PM TONIGHT at (833) 782-3539 to coordinate transportation to the Calallen FEMA Dome until capacity.

After 8 PM, patrons should contact 361-826-2489 (CITY) for help.

The Emergency Shelter has heat but does not have running water. The shelter can accommodate seniors, families, and anyone in need. Patrons will undergo a temperature check upon entry. Masks will be provided and must always be worn. Other Center for Disease Control COVID-19 protocol will be followed.

Meals and water will be provided onsite, and it is recommended to bring your own snacks and drinks. There are a limited number of blankets and pillows, however, it is recommended to bring your own. Please bring toiletries and other hygienic/sanitary supplies, such as deodorant, body and face wipes, and toothpaste and toothbrushes. Unfortunately, at this time we cannot accept pets.
