CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation will offer a series of programs, classes and events this fall that will surely meet any kid’s need for fun and enriching activities. These teach teamwork and life skills that are important as children grow and develop. Classes are available for adults as well. Don’t fall into bad habits this season. Make a commitment to yourself and for your kids to stay active.

Recreation Centers Afterschool Program will be offered FREE for ages 6-16 on Mondays through Fridays from 3-7pm. It’s an open campus program with general supervision that allows youth opportunities to discover new interests, make new friends and learn new life skills. Great places for children to play, learn and be social. Some activities include homework tutorials, sports, arts and crafts, games and more. Online registration is required and ongoing, space permitting. 

Stranger Rangers Class (Martial Arts) will be offered for children ages 5-15 on Tuesdays from 6:15-7pm at the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, 654 Graham Rd. This class is set up as a martial arts belt advancing system to teach children how to avoid abduction, how to get away and how to get help, while also including games, role playing, tests and fun competitions. Professional instruction provided by the Primetime-Kidsafe Company. Register online for $45/month plus a $15 seasonal registration fee.

Shorin-Ryu Karate Class will be offered for adults and children ages 6 and older on Mondays and Fridays from 4-5pm at the Oak Park Recreation Center, 842 Erwin Drive. Learn new street style martial arts that are different and exciting. The program teaches self-defense techniques in a safe environment while simulating real life situations. Professional Instruction is provided by Harriol Griffin. Register online for $20/month.

Shotokan Karate Class will be offered for ages 10 and up on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30pm at the Lindale Recreation Center, 3133 Swantner Drive. This martial art is founded on the basic techniques of punching, striking, kicking and blocking. Professional instruction provided by Raymond Martin Shodan. Register online for $30/month.

Tai Chi Class will be offered for ages 10 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7pm at the Joe Garza Recreation Center, 3204 Highland Avenue. This ancient Chinese martial art form is known to reduce stress levels through slow and relaxed movements for total self-development, including muscle strength, balance and flexibility. Professional instruction provided by John Castillo, who holds a 3rd degree blackbelt in Shotokan and Goju-ryi and a 2nd degree blackbelt in Tai Chi. Register online for $40/month.

Street Dance Class will be offered for adults and children ages 3 and older on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7pm at the Oso Recreation Center, 1111 Bernice Drive. Street dancing involves a range of funk and hip-hop dance styles. Popular forms of street dance include break-dance, popping, locking and house dance. The class incorporates a lot of cardio, squats, turns, jumps and stretching. Professional Instruction is provided by Jacob Murphy. Register online for $30/month.

Adult Aerobics Class will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm at the Lindale Recreation Center, 3133 Swantner Drive. The class incorporates strength training with weights and resistance to increase muscle and metabolism. It includes kickboxing, step-bench, body sculpting, ab work, flexibility and relaxation. Professional Instruction is provided by Cheryl Vandever. Register online for $25/month.

Mr. J’s Cosplay Academy will be offered for ages 10 and up on the second and last Friday of every month from 6-7:30pm at the Joe Garza Recreation Center, 3204 Highland Avenue. Participants will learn how to build a cosplay costume, market themselves, perform and become a professional. Professional instruction provided by John Pantoja, Corpus Christi Joker and first time ever original cosplay winner at Victoria Comic Con. Register online for $30/month for first child and $15/month for each additional child.
