Home Fire Safety Plan Can Save Your Life
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Consider this scenario: it is two o’clock in the morning and you and your family are fast asleep. You suddenly wake up to the sound of the smoke alarm and the smell of smoke. What do you do? If you and your family do not have a plan in place, your lives could be in danger.
The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) National Fire Prevention Week is October 8 through 14. This year’s theme is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out”. The Corpus Christi Fire Department is encouraging all residents to develop a home fire safety plan which includes having a secondary exit from every room with a clear path to a meeting place.
The Corpus Christi Fire Department offers these additional tips and recommendations for developing and practicing a home escape plan:
-
Draw a map of your home with all members of your household present, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
-
Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
-
Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
-
Make sure the address of your home is clearly marked for the fire department to find.
-
Close doors behind you as you leave — this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
-
Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
