City Board, Committee and Commission Vacancies

(Note:  All individuals considered for appointment by the City Council to a board, commission or committee must have an application on file in the Office of the City Secretary not later than 5:00 p.m. on the seventh calendar day before the date appointments are considered by City Council.)

The City Secretary’s Office is currently seeking biographical information forms for the following boards:

Animal Care Advisory Committee – Three (3) vacancies with terms to 5-31-18 and 5-31-20 representing the following category:  3 – Community At-Large.  The Animal Care Advisory Committee advises the City Council and City Manager on all aspects of animal control including fees, staffing, ordinances, procedures and policies and facilities.  The jurisdiction and actions of the Committee shall be advisory only.

Building Code Board of Appeals – Three (3) vacancies with terms to 5-4-19 representing the following categories:  1 – Architect, 1 – General Contractor and 1 – Building Industry Member. The Building Code Board of Appeals (BCBOA) shall have the power to hear individual appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official on rulings and alternate materials and methods of construction and, consider individual variances of the City Building Code, Existing Building Code, Residential Construction Code, Flood Hazard Prevention Code, and Energy Conservation Code.  Furthermore, the BCBOA shall have the power, after having obtained public comment, to recommend to the City Council changes to the City Building Code, Existing Building Code, Residential Construction Code, Flood Hazard Prevention Code, and Energy Conservation Code.

Civil Service Board – Three (3) vacancies with terms to 6-15-19 and 6-15-20 representing the following categories:  1 – Regular Member and 2 – Alternates.  The Civil Service Board adopts, amends, and enforces a code of rules and regulations providing for appointment, employment, or suspension in all positions in the classified service based upon citizenship, character, merit, efficiency, and industry, which shall have the force and effect of law; and also rules regulating promotions, demotions, reduction of force of employees in the classified service and in what order they shall be dismissed and reinstated.

Civil Service Commission – Three (3) vacancies with terms to 6-15-19 and 6-15-20 representing the following categories:  1- Regular Member and 2 - Alternates.  FOR FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE OFFICERS ONLY - The Civil Service Commission adopts, amends, and enforces a code of rules and regulations providing for appointment, employment, or suspension in all positions in the classified service based upon citizenship, character, merit, efficiency, and industry, which shall have the force and effect of law; and also, rules regulating promotions, demotions, reduction of force of employees in the classified service and in what order they shall be dismissed and reinstated.  With additional duties as outlined under Chapter 143, Texas Local Government Code.

Commission on Children and Youth – Two (2) vacancies with terms to 5-1-19 and 5-1-20 representing the following categories:  1 – At-Large and 1- Law Enforcement. The Commission on Children & Youth supports a comprehensive system of services and advances policies to meet the needs of Corpus Christi's children, youth and their families, including gathering information from people and entities to act as a source of information and referral on issues concerning children, developing an annual community action plan for children, youth and their families, advising the City Council on acquiring and allocating children and youth's resources and services, strengthening communications and encouraging partnerships between public and private entities working with children and youth, and serving as an advocate for local, state and federal policy benefitting children, youth and their families to the City Council, and to others as authorized by the Council.

Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau – One (1) vacancy with term to 10-1-17 representing the following category:  1 – Restaurant Industry. The bureau solicits various organizations and associations to conduct meetings/conventions/tradeshows within Corpus Christi year-round and to promote the City as a year-round destination.

Electrical Advisory Board – Nine (9) vacancies with terms to 12-31-17 and 12-31-18 representing the following categories:  1 – Registered Professional Engineer; 1 – Not Connected to the Electrical Industry, 1 - Commercial Builder, 1 – Electrical Engineer, 1 – Master Electrician, 1- Electrical Supply Business Representative, 1 – Utility Power Distributor Representative, 1 – Home Builder and 1 – Journeyman Electrician. The Electrical Advisory Board reviews grievances pertaining to contractors and the City Electrical Code.  It also can recommend to the City Council changes regarding the City Electrical Code.

Food Service Advisory Committee – One (1) vacancy with term to 6-24-17 representing the following category:  1 -Community At-Large.  The Food Service Advisory Committee advises the Director of Health on application of ordinances regarding food and food establishments, reviews the permit fees annually to ensure the cost of the program is returned to the City, conducts hearings pursuant to the sections of the ordinance relating to revocations and makes written recommendations to the City health officer whether to revoke or suspend a food manager's permit, pursuant to Art.19-84.

Human Relations Commission – One (1) vacancy with term to 6-14-17.  The Human Relations Commission studies problems of group relationships within the City, and devises and recommends to the Mayor and City Council ways and means of discouraging and combating prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry in all groups in their relations with one another; to discover all practices and policies calculated to create conflicts and tensions, and to recommend ways and means of eliminating any unfair or unjust discrimination by or against any person or group.

Library Board – One (1) vacancy with term to 11-5-17 representing the following category:  1 – Regular Member.  The Library Board shall be advisory to the City Council and its duties shall be to investigate and recommend to the Council matters relating to library services.

Marina Advisory Committee – Four (4) vacancies with terms to 12-18-18 representing the following categories: 1 - Representative of a Restaurant located within the Boundaries of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District, 2 – Community At-Large and 1 – Scientist i.e. Marine Biologist.  The Marina Advisory Committee advises and makes recommendations regarding development, use, or preservation of the marina, including the following:  (1) assist the City Council in providing for the orderly, planned development and use of the marina; (2) review the annual and capital improvement budgets regarding the improvement and maintenance of the facilities upon the marina; and (3) review and recommend to the City Council the feasibility of development, improvements, maintenance or proposed uses for the marina.

Mayor’s Fitness Council – Four (4) vacancies with terms to 5-11-19 representing the following categories:  2 – At-Large, 1 – Disability Networks and 1 – Worksite Wellness.  The Mayor's Fitness Council advises the City Council, City Manager, Parks Department and Health District regarding promotion of healthy living, including but not limited to the following activities:  encourage, promote and enhance healthy living through organized sports, events, diet and everyday activity, all with a strong emphasis on using natural resources.  In addition, to collaborate with community leaders in all sectors to develop and implement policy and environmental improvement strategies that will help combat chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardio pulmonary disease, and cancer.

Mechanical/Plumbing Advisory Board –Seven (7) vacancies with terms to 1-2-18 and 1-2-19 representing the following categories: 2 - persons with a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contracting Business (with at least 5 years active experience, preference for appointment may be given to persons licensed in the State of Texas in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration contracting (HVAC), 1 - Home Building Industry (with at least 5 years’ experience), 1 – Master Plumber whom shall have at least five (5) years active experience as a plumber, at least three (3) years of which shall have been in Corpus Christi, preference for appointment may be given to plumbers licensed in the State of Texas and currently active in the plumbing trade, 1 -person who shall have at least five (5) year’s experience in the commercial building industry, 1 - person who shall have at least five (5) years of active experience in landscape irrigation, preference for appointment may be given to irrigators licensed in the State of Texas, and 1 - person not connected with the building industry. The Mechanical/Plumbing Advisory Board advises the City Manager regarding any matter in the mechanical, plumbing and irrigation fields that it considers should be brought to the attention of the City Council. The board also makes recommendations to the City Council regarding changes to the City Fuel Gas, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Committee – Four (4) vacancies with terms to 6-16-17 and 6-16-18 representing the following categories: 1 - Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteer Workstation Representative (executive, director or similar leadership position at a non-profit agency that operates a RSVP Volunteer Station) and 3 – At-Large. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Committee advises the City Council, City Manager and Parks Department Staff regarding the RSVP including but not limited to recruitment strategies; providing support in recruitment of volunteers and volunteer stations; serves as community advocates and liaisons; assists in development of non-federal resources to include fundraising and other duties related to the RSVP.

Tree Advisory Committee – Five (5) vacancies with terms to 2-8-18 and 2-8-19 representing the following categories:  2 – At-Large, 1 – Landscape Architect, 1 – AEP Texas Representative and 1 – Arborist or Urban Forester. The Tree Advisory Committee reviews and recommends a formal written plan to the City Council for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal or disposition of public trees.

Water Resources Advisory Committee – Six (6) vacancies with terms to 4-1-18 and 4-1-19 representing the following categories:  1 - representative of a school district located within the city, 1 - residential customer (home owner) of the City's water system, 1 - large commercial customer of the City's water system, 1 - wholesale raw or treated water customer of the City's regional water supply system,  1- representative of a military facility, and 1 - member or employee of an organization that seeks to protect or positively influence the Nueces River watershed or its ecosystems.   The Water Resources Advisory Committee advises the City Council, City Manager and Water Superintendent in matters of water resources management.
