Much Needed Dredging Near the Corpus Christi Marina Approved

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo and the City Council approved a Motion authorizing a License Agreement with the Port of Corpus Christi to place dredge materials from the Breakwater Repairs and Boat Basin Dredging project near the Corpus Christi Marina.

Dredging will help maintain a navigable depth inside the Marina that is currently being hindered by the movement of silt and runoff from the land. This will allow watercrafts the ability to safely navigate the Marina and is crucial to the future use of the Marina.

The agreement approved by Council today allows the City of Corpus Christi to deposit 40,000 cubic yards (CY) of dredged material at the Rincon B West Dredge Material Placement Area. The dredged material will be removed from the breakwater in-between the Marina and McGee Beach, located in Council District 1. The dredge material will be collected as part of the Marina and McGee Beach Breakwater Phase I Repairs & Boat Basin Dredging Project. These projects were combined into a single bid package to facilitate execution. The Breakwater Repairs and Dredging near the Corpus Christi Marina will be advertised for bids later in February.

The breakwater’s concrete cap is experiencing severe structural degradation due to age and environmental exposure. The proposed improvements will make repairs to the existing stone breakwater and remove and replace the existing concrete cap with one that is two feet wider and one foot taller.
