Less Than Six Months After Voter Approval of Bond 2020, Design Firms Selected for All Street Projects
75% of the Streets Projects to have started Design by July 2021
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo and the City Council authorized the negotiation and execution of 22 professional services contracts for Civil Engineering Services for all Bond 2020 Streets projects. Nine engineering consultants from Corpus Christi were selected after a rigorous evaluation process to complete the Bond 2020 Streets projects.
In less than six months since voters approved the Bond 2020 Program, the City is moving forward with a new process to reduce the bond project execution timeline by implementing the mass selection of design consultants. Through this new process, City staff will spend less time on developing Requests for Qualifications, the selection and award process. These improvements allow for faster execution of projects, considerable time savings, and cost savings overall. Additionally, this process will allow the City to award the toughest project to the most qualified firm and award roughly equal work to firms that scored closely. The City’s focus is on getting these streets projects completed within budget and on time. The City anticipates 75% of the street projects to have started design by July 2021 and all Bond 2020 street projects are expected to be in design by February 2022.
The City released the Request for Qualifications for the mass selection of design service engineering consultants for the 22 street projects on November 30. The City received 23 proposals. Of the 23 proposals that were evaluated, 12 firms were selected for interviews of which nine firms were selected for final award. Individual Bond 2020 street projects are anticipated to begin the design phase as early as March 2021.
Residents overwhelmingly supported the Bond 2020 program totaling $75 million in 42 infrastructure projects. All three propositions passed with over 70% approval rating demonstrating high confidence in the City’s ability to deliver essential City services and infrastructure projects. The propositions passed on election day include projects for streets, parks, and public safety improvements. Proposition A – Streets projects includes a total of 22 projects with an estimated cost of $61 million for street improvements. This proposition allows for the designing, demolishing, constructing, renovating, improving, extending, and making permanent street, sidewalk, drainage, and any related improvements including underground utilities. The streets projects are located city-wide.
“Our economic growth is tied to our City infrastructure and with resident support of Bond 2020, we are moving forward into the design phase for all street projects in just six months,” said Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo. “I am proud to see Corpus Christi moving boldly into a new era of progress where we will fix our City streets.”
