Interim IT Director Saves Life at Local Restaurant

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - A City employee’s quick thinking helped save a resident’s life recently.

In August, Interim IT Director Peter Collins was at a local restaurant when he heard someone choking. With more than 15 years of experience in law enforcement, Collins knew a life was in danger and he had to help.

After administering the Heimlich maneuver, Gail Blanpied’s coughed up the food and was able to breathe again. When asked how he felt about the experience, Collins said, “Anytime you save someone’s life, it’s a blessing from God, to be at the right place at the right time.”

Collins said it is important for everyone to stay up to date with first aid education and this incident serves as an example of how the Heimlich maneuver saves lives. City Manager Peter Zanoni will recognize Collins’ heroic efforts during a future Council meeting.
