Grand Opening of Play-For-All Playground
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department invites everybody to celebrate the grand opening of the Play-for-All Playground at Salinas Park on Saturday, February 4, at 10:30am. The park is located at 1354 Airline Road.
The playground, which cost approximately $300,000, was funded by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in partnership with the Housing and Community Development Department.
Landscape Structure built and installed the playground. The company was selected by a panel of representatives from the Parks & Recreation Department, Miracle League and Commission for Persons with Disabilities. In addition, a stakeholder group including a local physical therapist, parents of children with special abilities and local sports leagues along with all the representatives listed above provided input on the elements and standards to be met by the design and construction of the facility.
Play-for-all means this structure is inclusive and provides opportunities for persons of all abilities to play together. For instance, there are two zip-lines; one that a person can hang on to and another that a person in a wheel chair can transfer onto a suspended chair. There is also a cozy cove for children with autism who may wish to seek out a quiet spot if things get too overwhelming for them. And a feature that will surely be a big favorite for many children is the Sway Fun Glider which allows a person in a wheelchair to glide back and forth along-side of their friends and family. It will also include a Rhapsody Outdoor Instruments set that features chimes, drums and metallophones.
The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department is dedicated to providing quality, affordable, enrichment programs for all ages and interests.
