Contract for Wesley Seale Dam Upgrades Awarded
Project includes Dam Crest Gate Rehabilitation and Dewatering System
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council awarded a $2.1 million contract to Freese and Nichols, Inc. to provide the design, bid, and construction administration phase services for the Wesley Seale Dam Crest Gate Rehabilitation and a Dewatering System.
The Wesley Seale Dam was built in 1958 and is located about 32 miles northwest of Corpus Christi. This project will facilitate the maintenance of the existing 60 crest gates and the design and construction of a robust dewatering system.
This project was developed based on an inspection of the dam by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), which identified the need to create a rehabilitation program for the South and North spillway crest gates.
Additionally, a dewatering system was recommended to allow gates and individual spillway maintenance. Dewatering removes ground or surface water from a precise location.
Project work scope includes:
- Topographic surveys of spillway bridges, piers, and gates
- Physical Hydropic Model Study and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permitting
- Existing spillway gate inspection, structural analysis, evaluation, and reports
- New spillway crest gate design for first 10 gates
The project’s design is expected to be completed in October 2023. Construction anticipated to begin in January 2024, with completion projected for November 2025.
