CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - In observance of March for Meals Month, the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation’s Senior Community Services is planning Community Champions week to highlight the importance of the Meals On Wheels program in our community. The guest meal delivery drivers will arrive at the Nutrition Education Service Center, 4101 Old Brownsville Road, then depart to deliver meals. The estimated completion is one hour.

We have designated the following days for invited guests to participate:

Wednesday, March 21 at 10:30am – Mayor and City Council (Mayor Joe Mc Comb, Council Members Ben Molina and Lucy Rubio have confirmed)

Thursday, March 22 at 11:30am – City Manager Margie C. Rose and Community Supporters

Friday, March 23 at 10:30am – Local Mascots: High Schools

The annual March for Meals commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. Since 2002, Meals On Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate this successful public-private partnership and garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.

Locally, we serve 500 clients on the Meals On Wheels program, and over 125 persons are on the waiting list for services. Recent state and federal funding decreases have resulted in a loss of $28,000 to the local Meals On Wheels program.

FUNDRAISER: We invite everyone in our community to come out to participate in the Hamburger Sale & Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 12 pm to 3pm at the Greenwood Senior Center, 4040 Greenwood Drive. Purchase your chili sample ticket for $1. The ticket for the hamburger meal with chips and drink is $6. All proceeds will benefit our local Meals On Wheels program clients.
