City Offers Suggestions for Winter Storm Brush Cleanup

Several Options Available for Residential Customers

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City Arborist recommends citizens wait two weeks before determining if frost bitten trees and foliage are viable or destroyed. In the interim, the City requests residents refrain from placing brush and debris on curbs or sidewalks until their respective collection area is scheduled for brush removal service. Premature placement of debris in these areas could block right of ways including sidewalks and bike lanes. Additionally, dried winter brush could end up in the City’s stormwater system and ultimately in our bays, estuaries, and creeks. The two-week observation period began on February 20.

“The City will not be fining our residents for brush pick up that has occurred as a result of the winter storm. This remains in effect until May,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said.

The City released details on a city-wide special brush collection program to mitigate the impact of last week’s extreme weather event. The one-time event will start on March 8, 2021. However, residential customers who want to remove damaged brush immediately can utilize the open brush drop-off area at the J.C. Elliott Collection Center located at 7001 Greenwood Drive. Normally, the brush drop-off area is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sundays. However, the brush drop-off area operating hours have been extended and the center will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please note that this extended service is available for residential customers only.

Residents can also call in a special collection through the City’s Super Bag Collection Service. The cost of a Super Bag is $135 and can be purchased at the J.C. Elliott Collection Center. There is no limit to the number of Super Bags customers can purchase. Once the bag is filled and ready for removal, simply call (361) 826-CITY (2489) to schedule the collection.
