City Encourages Residents to Properly Dispose of Grease

With the holidays upon us, lots of cooking will be taking place, meaning there will be leftover grease and oil. The City of Corpus Christi Utilities Department wants to remind citizens about the proper ways to dispose of fats, oils and grease (FOG).

Pouring grease down the kitchen sink can clog drains, causing sewer back-ups into homes, creating a health hazard and an unpleasant mess that can cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars in repairs.

Here’s some suggestions that will keep pipes free of clogs:

  • Place grease and oil in collection containers.

  • Never pour cooking grease down the sink drain, even if you run hot water afterwards.

  • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash cans. Avoid using a garbage disposal.

  • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pans, and fryers, by scraping or wiping off excess grease.

  • Place cooled cooking oil, in sealed non-recyclable containers and discard with your regular garbage.

FOG can cling to the insides of pipes and the sewer system. It can build up and eventually block pipes. For more information, please visit the wastewater department at Residents also can pick up free containers for disposing grease at the Utilities Department, 2726 Holly Road.
