Platicas Musicales Salutes the Queen of Bolero

CORPUS CHIRSTI, TX – Considered the queen of Tejano bolero music, Consuelo “Chelo” Silva will be the subject of this month’s Platicas Musicales (music talks) on Wednesday, March 28 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at Ben F. McDonald Public Library, 4044 Greenwood Drive.

Born in Brownsville, Texas, Silva’s career began in the 1930s and continued through the 1980s where she spent the later years of her life in Corpus Christi. She was a star in her own right but also performed with notable singers Alfredo Jimenez, Javier Solis and Lola Beltran.

Local music historian Manuel Ayala will lead the discussion entitled “Remembering Chelo Silva: La Reina del Bolero Tejano” and will feature a live musical performance by Martina Garcia of Silva’s best-known songs. Several pieces of rare Silva-related memorabilia will be on display. The public is invited to this free event.
