CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The MLK Day of Service will be celebrated nationally on January 15, 2018. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s question to us, “what are you doing for others?” has inspired us to reflect upon it each year on this day and, most importantly, to take action.

The City of Corpus Christi Senior Companion Program (SCP) volunteers will deliver care packages to residents at San Rafael Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on MLK Day.

These care packages were donated and put together by the Senior Companions and are filled with hygiene products and all kinds of goodies for the residence—from soaps and lotions to socks and scarves. This is another great way our seniors care for one another.

Senior Corps Senior Companions are volunteers age 55+ who make a difference by providing assistance and friendship to adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills. We help these individuals remain independent in their homes instead of having to move to institutional care. Senior Companions give families or professional caregivers a much-needed time off from their duties, run errands, and often provide friendship for their clients. Senior Companions Program has approximately 79 volunteers who provided 83,076 service hours during FY2017 valued at $2,089,361.40 (based on a national calculator).
