City Firefighters Ready to Help, Any Place, Any Time

Recently, four Corpus Christi firefighters found themselves jumping into action mid-air to help a fellow passenger suffering from extreme pain.

Captain Daniel Valdez, Firefighter II Engineer Carl Chism, Firefighter II Paramedic Mikal Stuive and Firefighter II Gabriel Gonzales, were on a flight returning to Corpus Christi after completing training in Florida. The plane’s pilot requested emergency assistance from medical personnel for an ill passenger and the firefighters immediately responded. The group worked with a doctor, who was also a passenger on the flight, and assessed the patient who had recently undergone surgery and complained of severe pain, dizziness and nausea.

Once the evaluation was complete, the patient was given her medications to manage the nausea and pain, and IV fluids for hydration. The firefighters continued to monitor the woman until the airplane landed and the patient was transferred to Houston Fire Department EMS. Quick action by the firefighters and doctor resulted in stabilizing the patient and no delays in the flight plan. For more information contact Captain James Brown at (361) 826-8423.
