City Board, Committee and Commission Vacancies

The City Secretary’s Office is currently seeking biographical information forms for the following boards:

Building Standards Board – Two (2) vacancies with terms to 3-3-19 representing the following categories:  1 - At-Large and 1 – Member chosen from:  realtor, architect, engineer, general contractor, home builder or building materials dealer. The board hears appeals under the Building Standards and Housing Code, which shall be construed to secure the beneficial interest and purposes of safety, health and general welfare, through structural strength, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards incident to the construction, alteration, repair removal, demolition, use and occupancy of building or structure.

Civil Service Board – One (1) vacancy with term to 6-15-16.  The board adopts, amends, and enforces a code of rules and regulations providing for appointment, employment, or suspension in all positions in the classified service based upon citizenship, character, merit, efficiency, and industry, which shall have the force and effect of law; and also rules regulating promotions, demotions, reduction of force of employees in the classified service and in what order they shall be dismissed and reinstated.

Civil Service Commission -FOR FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE OFFICERS ONLY – One (1) vacancy with term to 6-15-16.  The commission adopts, amends, and enforces a code of rules and regulations providing for appointment, employment, or suspension in all positions in the classified service based upon citizenship, character, merit, efficiency, and industry, which shall have the force and effect of law; and also, rules regulating promotions, demotions, reduction of force of employees in the classified service and in what order they shall be dismissed and reinstated.  With additional duty as outlined under Chapter 143, Texas Local Government Code.

Commission on Children and Youth – One (1) vacancy with term to 5-1-16 representing the following category:  1 – Health and Human Services Representative.  The Commission on Children & Youth supports a comprehensive system of services and advances policies to meet the needs of Corpus Christi's children, youth and their families including gathering information from people and entities to act as a source of information and referral on issues concerning children, developing an annual community action plan for children, youth and their families, advising the City Council on acquiring and allocating children and youth's resources and services, strengthening communications and encouraging partnerships between public and private entities working with children and youth, and serving as an advocate for local, state and federal policy benefitting children, youth and their families to the City Council, and to others as authorized by the Council.

Committee for Persons with Disabilities – Five (5) vacancies with terms to 2-1-17 and 2-1-18. The committee provides a program to encourage, assist and enable persons with disabilities to participate in the social and economic life of the City; to achieve maximum personal independence; to become gainfully employed; and to enjoy fully and use all public and private facilities available within the community.

Community Youth Development (78415) Program Steering Committee – Nine (9) vacancies with terms to 8-31-16 and 8-31-17 representing the following categories:  5 – Residents of the 78415 Zip Code and 4 – At-Large. The committee advises the City Council on a periodic basis of the progress regarding the Community Youth Development Program.

Corpus Christi Community Improvement Corporation/Loan Review Committee – Eight (8) vacancies with terms to 5-7-17 and 5-7-18 representing the following categories:  3 – Community At-Large, 1 – Financial Institution, 1 – Real Estate Agency, 1 – Engineer, 1 – Architect/Homebuilder and 1 – Legal Profession.  The committee reviews and approves loan applications submitted through the various loan programs.

Electrical Advisory Board – Three (3) vacancies with terms to 12-31-17 representing the following categories:   1 -Master Electrician (with at least 5 years active experience), 1 - Regular Engineer (registered professional with at least 5 years’ experience in the practice of electrical engineering, preference for appointment may be given to professional engineers licensed in the State of Texas), and 1 - Commercial Builder (with 5 years’ experience). The board reviews grievances pertaining to contractors and the City Electrical Code.  It also can recommend to the City Council changes regarding the City Electrical Code.

Island Strategic Action Committee – Seven (7) vacancies with terms to 3-23-19 representing the following categories:  3 – At-Large Representatives who are residents of the City, 1 - Realtor, who primarily represents buyers or sellers of property on Mustang or Padre Island, 1 - member of the Padre Isles Property Owners Association, who has been nominated by the association, 1 - Commercial Property Owner who owns property and operates a business on Mustang or Padre Island, and  - member of the Padre Island Business Association, who has been nominated by the association.  The Island Strategic Action Committee (ISAC) advises the Mayor and City Council on development and implementation of the Mustang-Padre Island Area Development Plan.  The ISAC shall develop specific strategies for implementation of the Mustang-Padre Island Development Plan with specific timelines to implement the respective strategies and a clear determination of which agency or individual is responsible to implement specific projects or programs.

Landmark Commission – Four (4) vacancies with terms to 11-20-18 representing the following categories:  1 – Historian, 1 – Person Knowledgeable in Title Search and/or Property Surveyor 1 – Licensed Real Estate Salesperson and 1 – Regular Member. The Landmark Commission promotes the use of historical and cultural landmarks for the culture, prosperity, education, and general welfare of the people of the City and visitors to the City.

Leadership Committee for Senior Services – Six (6) vacancies with terms to 2-1-17 and 2-1-18 representing the following categories:  2 – Direct Service Agency Representatives, 3 – Community Representatives and 1 – Senior Center Participant.  The committee assists the Senior Community Services (SCS) division staff in the development of comprehensive senior citizens program plans, advises the SCS division staff of the needs for services according to locally conceived priorities and other duties relating to the SCS operations.

Mechanical/Plumbing Advisory Board –Six (6) vacancies with terms to 1-2-18  representing the following categories: 1 - Master Plumber (with at least 5 years active experience and at least three years of which shall have been in Corpus Christi and currently active in the plumbing trade, preference for appointment may be given to plumbers licensed in the State of Texas), 1 – Plumber (with at least 5 years active experience and at least three years of which shall have been in Corpus Christi and currently active in the plumbing trade, preference for appointment may be given to plumbers licensed in the State of Texas ), 1 - Mechanical Engineer (with at least 5 years of active experience, preference for appointment may be given to professional engineers licensed in the State of Texas), 2 – Persons with a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contracting Business (with at least 5 years active experience, preference for appointment may be given to persons licensed in the State of Texas in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration contracting (HVAC), and 1 - Home Building Industry (with at least 5 years’ experience). The board advises the City Manager regarding any matter in the mechanical, plumbing and irrigation fields that it considers should be brought to the attention of the City Council. The board also makes recommendations to the City Council regarding changes to the City Fuel Gas, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Committee – One (1) vacancy with term to 6-16-16 representing the following category: 1 - Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteer Workstation Representative (executive, director or similar leadership position at a non-profit agency that operates a RSVP Volunteer Station). The committee advises the City Council, City Manager and Parks Department Staff regarding the RSVP including but not limited to recruitment strategies; providing support in recruitment of volunteers and volunteer stations; serves as community advocates and liaisons; assists in development of non-federal resources to include fundraising and other duties related to the RSVP.

Tree Advisory Committee – Three (3) vacancies with term to 2-8-18 representing the following categories:  1 – At-Large, 1 – Landscape Architect and 1 – Arborist or Urban Forester. The committee reviews and recommends a formal written plan to the City Council for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal or disposition of public trees.
